2. HVAC Design
This course deals with the HVAC system design. Through the classroom instruction, the students will be exposed to various aspects of HVAC system design, including system selection, calculations, system layout, drafting, specifications, and working procedures in this field. The use of computerized load calculation will also be covered.
This course will focus on practicality. The students without previous HVAC education but with an engineering background can become competent HVAC designers, provided they finish the course and practice with sample projects. The course is also of value to those who already have Canadian experience but want to broaden their knowledge base to meet future challenges.
The principal target of employment is design engineer in mechanical consulting firms. Other employment opportunities are also possible.
Those who take the HVAC design course are also encouraged to take plumbing and fire protection design course because they are all responsibilities of a well rounded mechanical designer.

3. Reinforced Concrete Structural Design
This course covers the theory and practice of reinforced concrete design. The structural design process for beams, columns, slabs, frames, flat slabs, footings, and retaining walls uses the ultimate strength design method based on the updated CSA standard A23.3-04 Design of Concrete Structures. The load provisions are consistent with National Building Code of Canada 2005 (NBCC 2005), and Ontario Building Code 2006 (OBC 2006).
Each lecture uses examples to demonstrate practical problem solving according to NBC 2005, OBC 2006 and CSA A23.3-04. A 12-storey reinforced concrete office building employed core walls is used as an example to demonstrate overall design procedure from load calculation, structure analysis involving lateral load including wind load and seismic load, members design including flat slab, shear wall and column design, basement wall and footing design.

8. Autodesk Revit MEP
Revit MEP is an object-based software package for building engineers and designers in the design of mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection. It facilitates the creation of a “Building Information Model” (BIM) in which plans, sections, elevations, 3D models, quantities, materials and other data are fully coordinated and can be manipulated, accessed, and shared. From the BIM database, the user can perform design tasks, query quantities and takeoffs, and generate drawing sheets. From a production point of view, it means less time for drafting and coordinating, because all drawings and reports come from the same parametric model. If this model changes, all “Views”, including floor plans, sections, elevations, or even schedules reflect the change dynamically.
Taking this course and mastering the functionality of Revit MEP will hone your skills and improve your competence in the current harsh job market.
